This depends on the club you wish to join. With any club, you have to pay a membership fee. How much this costs is dependent upon the equipment needed for that sport and is set by each individual club. However, some BUCS groups members are required to purchase a Sport Lancaster membership in addition to their club membership. These are know as Sport Lancaster Plus clubs.

This cost of this membership is equivalent to a gym membership, the minimum requirement being a Bronze membership which costs £109 for the year and can be purchased at the University Sports Centre. Full details of membership can be found on the Lancaster Sport Centre websiteAs part of the package all Sport Lancaster Plus clubs listed above will have their BUCS fees including affiliation and transport costs covered (in line with current agreements). Members also gain access to the gym (at the times relevant to your level of membership) and exclusively for Sport Lancaster Plus clubs 6.15pm to 10pm every Sunday evening. Members have access to training facilities at least twice a week and will not have to purchase playing kit as it is provided courtesy of the Students' Union and the university to the club. This kit is club owned, not individually owned and therefore must be returned at the end of the year. 


Please remember all members must take their library cards to every training session and gym session from now on to be able to partake.


Which groups do not have to buy the Sport Lancaster membership?


Groups listed below are still BUCS competing clubs, but with different training requirements (particularly off-site) and therefore members of these clubs are not required to have a Sport Lancaster membership

  • Cycling
  • Handball
  • Pool & Snooker
  • Running
  • Shooting
  • Snow sports
  • Triathlon

Due to the nature of these clubs, they are primarily self-funded and therefore fund various activities as and when required, including kit, please contact individual clubs for more details.


What if I cannot afford the costs? 


Anyone wishing to partake in any of the above listed sports, but experiencing financial difficulty and therefore feel unable to commit to membership costs please see the Sport Lancaster Access fund.
